Hours

Hours:  We are open on Tuesdays, 5pm – 10pm. You can begin shopping before our public shop openings on Tuesdays by following our bike shopping directions below; in that way, we can help you find a bike that matches your specifications.

Phone in 304-933-2633 (304-WEE-CODE) when you arrive or try to catch the attention of a volunteer.

Donations

Positive Spin is an all-volunteer non-profit organization entirely supported by volunteer time, bike, part and tool donations, the sale of reused bikes and parts, memberships, repair stand time, and monetary donations.

Please contact us before bringing bike donations, or show us the bikes you are interested in donating when you arrive. Parts, tools, accessories (locks, lights, clothing, etc.) are always appreciated, and we usually receive donations of some larger items like car racks.

Shop for a Bike

Opened or closed, you can shop for a refurbished bike anytime at the Spin. We encourage you to conveniently begin your shopping experience before visiting, simply by emailing info@positivespin.org with this information about you or other people you are representing:

After we receive your inquiry, we will get back to you with matching bikes looking for new homes, then you can come visit the bikes at the shop during our Tuesday openings.

Volunteer

Why?
As a non-profit bike collective, which educates, encourages and empowers people to maintain and ride bikes anywhere, anytime, for any reason, we have always relied on people from the community to donate their time. Volunteers help each other or patrons, or repair bikes to fund our organization or for giveaway, or sweep floors or clean bikes or help with organizing. Positive Spin provides a rewarding social environment and learning experience to everyone who donates their time to our mission while increasing ridership, and making our community healthier and happier.

Other benefits include:
Volunteer hours may be used to redeem repair stand time, normally $10/hr, on a one-to-one hour basis.

Volunteer hours may be used in place of cash, up to the sweat equity limit of $100, to earn one used bike, and used parts within the shop season (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31). Applicable volunteer hours are reset to 0 at the beginning of each new shop season; exchange rate is $8/hr.

Here’s the way the hours (fondly referred to as Spin coins) work:
1. 100% exchange rate for the first $100 per shop season. To receive the full amount, the volunteer has to give 12.5 hours of their time within the last 365 days.
2. 25% exchange rate after the first $100 per shop season for volunteers that have given less than 100 volunteer hours over the last 365 days.
3. 50% exchange rate after the first $100 per shop season for volunteers with at least 100 volunteer hours over the last 365 days.

Example (we teach math, too!): A new season has begun, and a volunteer has donated 50 hours for the new season. The volunteer has more than 100 hours accrued over the last 365 days. They purchase a $300 bike, and they use the full $100 (12.5 hr) of their sweat equity, and take an additional 50% off the remaining balance of $200 (25 hr) for a total purchase price of $100. They now have 12.5 hr left, which they can apply for 50% off used parts or they could use for 12 hours of repair stand time.

Policies

This is Your Community Bike Shop. It is open to the public, providing a space for people to work on bikes, and to learn bike mechanics skills. Keep your workspace clean, and put back all tools and parts. Ask a Coordinator if you need help.  Always, sign-in/sign-out regardless of your purpose (status) for being in the shop, and if your status changes, sign-out, and sign-in with the new status. Understand our Repairs Policy, Safer Space Agreement, Storage Policy and Trade-in Policy below.

Repairs Policy:
We are all volunteers, and during shop hours open to repairs we will not repair your bike for you or schedule repairs, but rather we will help you do-it-yourself. At Positive Spin you can find work stations with tools, bicycle repair stands, repair manuals, reasonably priced bicycle parts, and volunteers with varying levels of experience in various areas of bicycle maintenance and repair.

Volunteers may help you diagnose, repair and provide instruction about your bicycle. You may discover that at the Spin even highly experienced volunteers learn new skills from others! If you have a physical issue or disability preventing you from physically repairing your bicycle, we still want you to be part of the process in whatever way you are able, and we will gladly help facilitate the repair of your bicycle.

Repair stand time is free during the 30 days after a purchase of a bicycle.

Storage Policy:
No storage in the shop for personal projects or property. All bike purchases must go home with you. We will not provide special exemptions, nor provide reimbursements for stolen personal property.

Trade-in Policy:
No trade-ins, with the exception of bikes for kids’ 10 years old or younger. Mass retailer kid’s bikes are $20 and $10 with a trade-in.

Safer Space Agreement:
As visitors or volunteers at Positive Spin, we agree to maintain a safer space. A safer space is an inclusive environment in which everyone can feel welcome, where no one is shown favoritism, and everyone can feel safe from oppressive, discriminatory and hateful behavior and language. This includes, but is not limited to, physical and verbal abuse, sexual harassment, or discrimination based on race, culture, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, political beliefs, physical characteristics, disabilities, social or economic background.

If you feel anyone is not abiding by this agreement, please tell a volunteer or constructively confront the individual yourself. If behavior that violates this agreement persists, it can potentially lead to being banned from Positive Spin.
