Good morning,
This article appeared recently in a Albany, NY newspaper where walking or biking to school are banned (even with adult supervision). This is the case in most Mon County schools as well. Are we going to do something about it? They are!

Here's commentary on the ban:

It is estimated that 21 percent to 27 percent of peak morning traffic is school-related. In Morgantown it is probably higher, since no school encourages it (please respond if you know of exceptions.
Of the 815 fatalities related to school transportation per year 75 percent are from passenger car transportation to or from school and only 22 percent are due to walking/bicycling. Only 2 percent are associated with official school transportation, so clearly much needs to be done to make walking/biking as safe as bussing.
Tomorrow is national bike/walk to school day. Here's what you can do about it.
Get together with other families at your schools and walk or bike to school in large, supervised groups. Look for resources here:

Write to the paper and radio stations about your experience.
Meet with your school board to change policies and improve support and facilities for walking/biking. Encourage teachers, staff and administrators to set an example by walking and biking when they can.
Repeat until conditions improve - For good.
Meanwhile, if you (or a responsible adult) accompany your children then the school has no liability, and no excuse for a ban.
Good luck.
